Towards a gradual end to tail docking: the experience of two French experimental farms

2026 · IFIP · eng

The gradual phasing out of tail docking should be considered when tail biting is not observed. The aim is not to unilaterally stop tail docking, due to the risk of tail biting, but to progressively increase the proportion of pigs with intact tails on the farm. Objective: to illustrate a stepwise approach to stop tail docking and to assess the consequences on tail biting, onfarm interventions, and carcass condemnations at slaughter, in two experimental facilities.
